WHAT IS UVGI?

UVGI stands for Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation, a method of sterilisation that uses ultraviolet (UV) light. The wavelength of UV light is shorter than that of visible light and exists in a number of wavebands.

Our products operate using UVC irradiation at a wavelength of 254 nanometres (nm) to lethally damage airborne microorganisms. This is known as the germicidal irradiation wavelength, and the recognised term for this, throughout the world, is UVGI.

HOW DOES UVGI WORK?

UVGI works as a mutagen to bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms on a cellular level, penetrating the cell wall. This disrupts the microorganism DNA (deoxyrilbonucleic acid), breaking the carbon bond, which causes the death of the cell and/or renders it incapable of multiplying. UV has been known as a mutagen for over a hundred years. In 1903 the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded to Niels Finsen for his use of UV against tuberculosis.

Simple installation and ease of operation, together with the cost and environmental benefits over other processes, makes UV air sterilisation a viable technology option for indoor air purification. However, its success depends on the UV intensity combined with 'dwell time' - the length of time particles are exposed to the light.

Working alongside air movement and acoustic specialistsMansfield Pollard, research and development has included long-term testing in UK hospitals, at the UK Government Health Protection Agency Biosafety test house Porton Down and with the Pathogen Control Department at the University of Leeds. This has produced an air sanitation product range that harnesses maximum light intensity with optimum dwell time. Each UVGI product features high efficiency, low pressure, high wattage UV lamps mounted within the air stream, shining into a reflective anacoil chamber. Quartz shrouded lamps help prevent tube degeneration and maximise the light intensity to ensure the best possible air sterilisation.
